About Us
At The Lewisham Garden Company, we create and care for beautiful gardens across South East London with a commitment to environmental stewardship and horticultural excellence.
We have three key principles that drives our decisions. We believe that gardens should be about people, plants and the planet. That means we create gardens that are focused on the needs of the individuals who will use that space. We will fill the garden with plants that will thrive there, and we will work in a way that enhances the natural environment rather than harm it.
Our values
A commitment to sustainability
Our business is built on a commitment to environmental stewardship, aiming for net-zero operations. This is demonstrated through our use of electric vehicles, which are charged with solar power, and the use of battery-operated tools to reduce noise and emissions. We prioritise low-mileage plants from plant nurseries in South East England.
Horticultural Excellence and Biodiversity
Our core expertise lies in delivering horticultural excellence and enhancing biodiversity by employing a planting style to create naturalistic, biodiverse gardens that support local wildlife. This approach moves beyond simple aesthetics to actively improve the ecological health of the spaces we work in.
Caring for People, Plants and the Planet
We are dedicated to creating empowering environments for everyone we work with. We believe gardening is a valuable and professional skill, and we are committed to fairly compensating our staff and supporting their continuous development. We want our team to feel supported and happy so that they can grow, belong, and thrive, which in turn helps us create the same positive environment for our clients.
Our Story
Our company was founded in 2025 by Richard Burns to bridge the gap between exceptional UK horticulture, like the gardens at Great Dixter and Sissinghurst, and the reality of suburban London gardens.
After spending his twenties in the Royal Navy, Richard worked in a management role at Great Dixter for six months. There, he observed firsthand the immense effort and knowledge required to create a place of such superb beauty. Recognizing the gap between the skills of world-renowned gardeners and what was available to London homeowners, he created this company to bring those expert skills to homes in Southeast London.
